Gabriela Cariño Silang

Joan of Arc of Ilocandia, Filipino Heroine

March 19, 1731 – September 20, 1763) was a Filipino military leader best known for her role as the female leader of the Ilocano independence movement from Spain. She took over from her second husband Diego Silang after his assassination in 1763, leading her people for four months before she was captured and executed by the colonial government of the Captaincy General of the Philippines.

Did you know that the Gabriela Silang monument in Ayala Triangle Gardens got inaugurated by Gabriela Silang’s great-granddaughter Gloria Cariño and her great-grandson Mario Cariño Merritt in 1971 created by Jose M. Mendoza, the Gabriela Silang Monument commemorates one of the first Filipina revolutionaries who sacrificed her life for our country’s freedom.
